LSG - Levert.Sweat.Gill: A Review of the R&B Supergroup's Debut Album

LSG was a R&B supergroup formed by three of the genre's most successful singers: Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill. Their debut album, Levert.Sweat.Gill, was released in 1997 and became a huge hit, selling over two million copies and spawning four singles: "My Body", "Door #1", "Round and Round" and "Curious".

The album showcased the trio's vocal talents and chemistry, as well as their versatility in different styles of R&B, from smooth ballads to upbeat grooves. The album also featured guest appearances from other stars such as Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, MC Lyte and Missy Elliott. The album received positive reviews from critics and fans alike, who praised the group's harmonies, production and songwriting.

Levert.Sweat.Gill is widely regarded as one of the best R&B albums of the 1990s and a classic example of collaboration among artists. The album earned the group a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album and a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album. The album also cemented the group's legacy as one of the most influential and successful R&B groups of all time. After the success of their debut album, LSG returned with their second and final album, LSG2, in 2003. The album was released by Elektra Records and featured a more contemporary R&B sound than their previous work. The album also included collaborations with some of the hottest names in hip-hop and R&B at the time, such as Loon, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, MC Lyte and Missy Elliott.

The album's lead single, "Just Friends", was a catchy mid-tempo track that sampled Whodini's "Friends" and featured a rap verse from Loon. The song peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The second single, "Shake Down", was a club-ready anthem that featured Busta Rhymes and LL Cool J on the remix. The song reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The third single, "Yesterday", was a heartfelt ballad that sampled The Beatles' classic song of the same name. The song was a tribute to Gerald Levert's father, Eddie Levert, who had passed away earlier that year. The song climbed to number 8 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

LSG2 received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the group's vocals and chemistry, but criticized the album's lack of originality and cohesion. The album sold over 500,000 copies in the US and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album also charted in France, where it reached number 127 on the SNEP Albums chart. LSG2 was the last album released by LSG before Gerald Levert's death in 2006.Despite the commercial and critical success of LSG2, the group did not release another album together. The group members focused on their solo careers and other projects. Gerald Levert released four more solo albums before his untimely death in 2006 due to a fatal combination of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. Keith Sweat continued to record and produce R&B music, as well as hosting a syndicated radio show called The Sweat Hotel. Johnny Gill reunited with his former group New Edition and also released two more solo albums.

In 2013, Johnny Gill announced on The Arsenio Hall Show that he was planning to revive LSG with Eddie Levert, Gerald's father and a member of the legendary group The O'Jays. He said that he wanted to honor Gerald's legacy and continue the group's music. However, no further details or updates have been given about this project since then.

LSG was a unique and influential group that brought together three of the most powerful and distinctive voices in R&B history. They created timeless music that resonated with millions of fans around the world. They also paved the way for other R&B supergroups such as TGT (Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank) and The
